How to Be a Good Friend – A 3-Part Video Series for Kids

Friendship is one of the most important lessons children learn in their early years. But being a good friend doesn’t always come naturally. Kids often face moments like:

“Nobody wants to be my friend.”

“We had a fight and now we’re not talking.”

“It’s not fair—they got the prize, and I didn’t.”

Without guidance, these struggles can leave children feeling stuck, discouraged, or isolated. That’s why we created How to Be a Good Friend—a three-part video series designed especially for K–5 students. These short, engaging lessons teach kids that friendship is a choice rooted in kindness and equip them with the words and actions to live it out.

By the end of the series, students will:

Understand that friendship means caring about others, not just themselves.

Learn to solve problems peacefully using the phrase, “Can we work it out?”

Practice considering others through kind words and actions that build community.

Each video is short (ideal for younger attention spans) and pairs with simple reflection prompts that guide students before, during, and after viewing. Teachers can use the lessons during SEL blocks, morning meetings, or small-group time. Parents can use them for family discussions, sibling dynamics, or playdates.

Every lesson follows the same simple structure:

Objective: A clear “I can” statement for students.

Make It Stick: Reflection prompts before, during, and after viewing.

Practical Examples: Relatable scenarios from the playground, classroom, or home.

The three lessons include:

1. Caring About Others’ Wants and Needs – Choosing kindness, even when it means not always getting your way.

2. Working Out Problems Peacefully – Learning to say, “Can we work it out?” before asking an adult for help.

3. Considering Others With Words and Actions – Celebrating others and making choices that create a positive classroom and family culture.

Mister Brown has shared the Choose Well program with thousands of students nationwide, helping schools strengthen their SEL programs and reduce classroom conflicts.
